Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is a non-profit 501(c)(3) therapeutic horseback riding program dedicated to teaching horseback riding to individuals with disabilities.
Therapeutic horseback riding at Pal-O-Mine brings about remarkable benefits to our students through stretching both mind and muscles. Improvements in posture, balance, coordination, muscle tone, confidence and self-worth are seen almost immediately. Physically, the horse's movement has a dynamic effect on the rider's body. Emotionally, the success of overcoming fear and anxiety can increase a rider's self esteem. Learning riding skills will also have a positive effect on a rider's self confidence. Cognitively, the horse provides many of our riders with the motivation to learn new things. Educational goals such as letter recognition, number sequencing or word identification can all be incorporated into the riding activities. Socially, therapeutic riding enables individuals to interact with their peers in a group activity.
Riding is fun as well as challenging. Through the development of an individual riding plan unique to each rider's needs, the staff at Pal-O-Mine develops specific goals and objectives for each student.
Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP)
Our EAP program follows the prescribed model designed by EAGALA, Inc., the leading international EAP training and certifying organization. All staff, equine specialists and licensed social workers are certified by EAGALA. EAGALA has recognized Pal-O-Mine as their Networking Center in the Northeast. All staff/personnel participate in ongoing training and experiential workshops to further their education and skills to better serve our clients. Lisa A. Gatti, our Executive Director serves on EAGALA's Board of Directors.
We offer individual, family and group therapy. Groups focus on the following issues: grief, trauma and abuse, eating disorders, substance abuse, addiction and codependency. At risk youth and women's empowerment are among these groups as well. EAP affords clients the opportunity to gain knowledge about their negative behaviors while providing them with an emotionally safe environment for them to develop positive alternatives.
This is accomplished utilizing horses as part of the therapy team which includes a licensed therapist and a horse professional. The benefits to the client include increased self-esteem, improved communication skills, assertiveness, creative thinking, problem solving, development of coping skills and taking responsibilities for themselves.
